The core work of the Philosophy department is developing the theory and practice of an entirely new discipline called ‘Evolutionary Mentology’ (EM). Evolutionary Mentology is a philosophical cum scientific inquiry into the origins, evolution, and functioning of both the human mind and the process of Nature as a whole, their future evolutionary direction and the relationship between them.

The purpose of this comprehensive inquiry is simply to enable a contemporary individual to reduce the contradictions and conflicts that he/she is facing today and increase his/her pleasures and happiness. How? Through discovering some new tools of understanding and doing, which he/she can use to intelligently restructure and upgrade his/her own mental processes and capabilities—emotional, intellectual, sensitivity and habit processes—and to make a new culture, politics, economics, in short, a new society. 1

This entire body of thinking incorporates work (in the form of 744 (to date) audio lectures by Mr. Kazim) on a whole range of interconnected areas and issues of inquiry, offering new insights and generating knowledge beyond what contemporary natural and social sciences are coming up with. One can get a fair idea of its scope from the following list of topics it deals with.

The macro dimension of this inquiry includes topics like:

1. Logic and its unified functioning in Nature

2. The evolutionary logic through which new phenomena emerge in Nature

3. Nature’s own evolution from unintelligent random logic to programmed and then intelligent or conscious logic.

4. The logic and processes leading to the birth of living things and their brain/mind processes

5. The evolution of the brain/mind processes up to the human mind, pleasure and pain and their role in evolution.

6. The nature and core issues of human evolution as opposed to animal evolution,

7. The current evolutionary stage and problems of the human mind,

8. Viable directions for its future evolution, and its connection with the evolutionary theme of Nature.

9. The term ‘consciousness’ as used in this inquiry, distinction between ‘awareness’ and ‘consciousness’.

The micro dimension encompasses topics like:

1. The connection between genes and brain/mind processes, and between brain and mental processes,

2. the non-biological functioning of mental genes and how genes control the functioning of our mental processes.

3. The different modules that form the mind; emotional, intellectual, habit and Will modules, the logic of their interconnected functioning, the energy forms in which they are operating.

4. Mental response system and contemporary human personality; its origins, formation, components and functioning,

5. Mental tools for restructuring the existing gene-based mind and evolving an intelligent post-genetic mind.

6. Transition from gene-based unintelligent mind to a post-genetic intelligent mind

The social dimension of this inquiry covers topics like:

1. A critique of the past movements (both of political revolt and social reform) for social change,

2. The nature scope and features of the new movement for change required in contemporary times,

3. Intelligent mental processes, as new means of production to spearhead the movement for social change.

4. The third Renaissance

1aContinuous work is being carried out on developing, chiseling, verifying and organizing the growing body of thought in all these areas, in the light of available knowledge from disciplines such as psychology, biology, quantum/particle physics, brain sciences, consciousness studies, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, genetics, evolution, astrophysics and sociology. Combined with a detailed analysis of perceptions and knowledge acquired from the works in philosophy, history, politics, sociology and religious history.

For organizing and sharing this work, the activities of the department include:

1. transcribing, titling, formatting and categorizing the audio lectures on Mentology delivered by Mr. Kazim.

2. Compiling and composing these lectures in the form of papers, and at a parallel level in the form of specific chapters of a book. Up to now four drafts of Evolutionary Mentology and a comprehensive paper (among other papers) which was chosen as poster presentation in the July 2007 conference ‘Toward the Science of Consciousness’ in Budapest, have come out and work on the final version is in process.

3. Classification, cataloguing and regular updating of the knowledge base relevant to Mentology is another task of the department.

2 Very soon the department will be launching the Evolutionary Mentology Web-blog in order to share and communicate the detailed work of Mentology to philosophers, scientists and other interested individuals within and outside of Pakistan. The aim is to engage them in a dialogue so that further crystallization and maturing of this work can take place through a fruitful exchange of critical comments, feedback, etc.
